Andy Reid gave John Harbaugh advice before his big Giants decision

Andy Reid and John Harbaugh are old pals.

John Harbaugh spoke to his old pal Andy Reid before taking the Giants’ head coaching job.

Reid — the Chiefs’ legendary coach who was fired by the Eagles after the 2012 season — had some valuable advice for Harbaugh.

“Andy is a man of few words,” Harbaugh said Tuesday at his introductory press conference. “And his four words to me were: ‘Change can be good.’ That’s what he said: ‘Change can be good.’”

Harbaugh said Reid was “fired up” when he took the Giants job.

“He’s a good friend,” Harbaugh said. “How about we do this? We’ll sign up for that deal right now – what he did in Kansas City. Let’s do that.”

Harbaugh, who was fired by the Ravens earlier this month, was talking about the successful second act he envisions with the Giants.

The difference, of course, is that Harbaugh won a Super Bowl with the Ravens, and Reid came up short in Philadelphia. No head coach has ever won a Super Bowl ring with two different franchises. Can Harbaugh make history after failing to reach the big game with quarterback Lamar Jackson?

Harbaugh got his start in the NFL with the Eagles in 1998. A year later, they hired Reid, who retained Harbaugh as his special teams coordinator. In 2008, Harbaugh left to become Baltimore’s head coach.

Harbaugh won his lone Super Bowl ring in 2012. A year later, Reid landed in Kansas City, in the immediate wake of his Eagles firing. From 2019-24, Reid reached five Super Bowls in six seasons and won three of them.

Meanwhile, the Giants have done next to nothing since their 2011 Super Bowl title — two playoff trips, with one win in 2022.

At this point, after a 13-38 record since that wild-card round victory, Giants fans would just sign up for a winning season, let alone Reid-level accomplishments.
