The Toronto Blue Jays could be active at the Trade Deadline despite their recent success.
Blue Jays Predicted to Land Diamondbacks Star Before MLB Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Toronto Blue Jays are tied with the Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs for the second-best record in baseball, and their home performances are a big reason why. Toronto's 37 wins at the Rogers Centre are tied with the New York Mets for the most home victories in MLB ahead of Thursday's slate, and its 17 losses are tied for the second-least.
The Blue Jays won yet another home series against the New York Yankees from Monday to Wednesday, as they emerged victorious in two of the three contests. They're now four games ahead of the Yankees for first place in the AL East.
However, Toronto could still use pitching help as the July 31 Trade Deadline approaches. Hurlers Alek Manoah (elbow), Yimi García (ankle), Ryan Burr (rotator cuff), Bowden Francis (shoulder), Nick Sandlin (elbow), Paxton Schultz (finger), and No. 4 prospect Ricky Tiedemann are all on the team's IL right now.
ESPN's David Schoenfield predicted on Thursday that the Blue Jays will land a starting pitcher from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
"The Blue Jays just keep winning, despite a rotation that ranks in the bottom third in the majors in ERA (Eric Lauer has been their best starter of late)," he wrote. "We have them missing out on [Seth] Lugo and [Mitch] Keller, in part because their farm system isn't considered particularly strong, so the final domino on our list is Kelly going to Toronto."
"[Jeff] Passan had good reasoning as to why the Diamondbacks would be more likely to trade Kelly than Gallen," he continued. "Both are free agents, but Arizona could look to re-sign the older (and thus less expensive) Kelly in the offseason while keeping Gallen and giving him a qualifying offer to recoup a draft pick if he leaves as a free agent."
Kelly is 9-5 with a 3.32 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP in 21 starts this season. The 36-year-old owns a 62-49 record with a 3.76 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 161 career MLB starts.
Up next for Toronto is a bout with the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night.
