Layla Drury made history for Manchester United with a record-breaking cameo in their 5-0 rout of Burnley.
United put Burnley to the sword
United advanced to the next round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup as they eased to a dominant victory over Burnley last weekend.
Maya Le Tissier broke the deadlock for United with a ferocious strike before Julia Zigiotti and Simi Awujo each got on the scoresheet to give United a commanding lead heading into the break.
January signing Lea Schuller marked her full debut with a goal immediately after the interval. Drury then came off the bench in the 66th minute, replacing Melvine Malard, and made it 5-0.
Drury demonstrated some sublime movement to get on the end of a ball from Hinata Miyazawa and then expertly slotted the ball into the back of the net, past a helpless Kirstie Levell.
Drury had been named on the bench for United’s past two games, the quarter-final win over Tottenham Hotspur in the Subway Women’s League Cup as well as the Barclays Women’s Super League draw with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium right at the start of the year.
Drury makes United history
Making her first-team bow at 16 years and 220 days, Drury became the youngest player to represent United when she was thrust into the action vs. Burnley.
She takes over from Lauren James, who turned out for the club for the first time at 16 years and 324 days old.
Courtesy of her goal, Drury also set a new record, becoming United Women’s youngest goalscorer.
She spoke to MUTV after the final whistle and said, “I didn’t expect to come on today and to score on my debut as well – grateful is an understatement! I’m thankful to everyone.”
“I think the team did really well for me to come into the game and they all encourage me in training and they just say: ‘Go be yourself out there.’ So, I’m just really proud of the team, to win today, and I’m just really happy to get a goal.”
She added, “Every day at training, they [my team-mates] just show me so much love and I’m thankful for that.”
Marc Skinner and his players are next in action on Wednesday evening take on Arsenal in the semis of the League Cup.
