The Phoenix Suns were given a poor offseason grade despite making multiple changes to their roster.
Suns Earn Poor Offseason Grade for Refusing to Completely Blow Up Roster originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Phoenix Suns entered the offseason expected to make some massive changes to their roster and that is exactly what they have done.
Phoenix began the summer by trading Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks and draft capital, including the pick they used to select Khaman Maluach.
They then selected Maluach, Rasheer Fleming and Koby Brea during the 2025 NBA and also acquired Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets.
Phoenix then signed Devin Booker to a massive two-year contract extension and officially ended the big three era by buying out Bradley Beal’s contract.
It has truly been an offseason full of change for the Suns but despite these moves, Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes gave them a D- offseason grade.
“The Suns had limited options this summer, but only because of so many reckless transactions in the recent past. These moves could theoretically lead to improvements, but not to the degree where Phoenix can compete for a top-six spot in the West,” Huges wrote. “This was a blow-it-up situation, and the Suns chose not to hit the detonator.”
Hughes makes a great point about how the Suns dug themselves into the deep hole they were in entering the offseason after multiple years of bad moves under owner Mat Ishbia but they have done a solid job of retooling their roster around Booker this offseason.
Of course, the Suns were hoping to land a larger return for Durant but adding three players in Green, Brooks and Maluach for one is a major help to their depth entering next season, which was an issue last year.
Adding Williams is a major risk due to his injury history but if he is able to stay healthy, the Suns will likely come out on top in the trade.
Because of this, Hughes’ grade may be a little harsh for Phoenix as they did a solid job to clean up their near impossible situation by making multiple moves, though they will likely not be a playoff team next season.
