AL Contender 'Engaged' in Trade Talks for Cubs' Top Deadline Target

An AL contender is reportedly engaged in trade talks for the Chicago Cubs' top target ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

The Chicago Cubs must understand that if they want Eugenio Suarez to be a member of their roster in the next few days, they have to be aggressive.

Chicago are in a position where they realistically shouldn't get outbid by any ball club, but while Suarez would ideally be the perfect player they could add, it's also fair to wonder just how much the Cubs should give up to land him.

The idea should be to go all in to win a World Series this season, but the right-handed hitting third baseman doesn't have more than a few months left on his current contract. The Cubs could hope that his agent would give them a silent acceptance of taking a long-term deal at the end of the campaign in the event they add him, but there's obviously a risk in doing that.

Ultimately, the Cubs must determine what they want to do, but Suarez will be sought after by other teams, and that's something they need to consider.

According to a recent report from Adam Jude of the Seattle Times, the Diamondbacks have already had trade talks with the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners, a squad Suarez once played with, are also in a position to add at the deadline.

"Industry sources familiar with the club’s plans say the Mariners and Diamondbacks have engaged in preliminary discussions about Suarez, a candidate for the National League MVP whose 36 home runs this season trail only the 38 homers from the Mariners’ Cal Raleigh,” he wrote.

Arguably a top-three power-hitter in Major League Baseball this season, Suarez has 36 home runs, 86 RBI, and will likely be the best player moved at the deadline.
