Rômulo had given the hosts a deserved first-half lead and they should have score more, but Bayern were immense in the second period as Serge Gnabry, Harry Kane, Jonathan Tah, Aleksandar Pavlović and Michael Olise netted.
"They really gave us a problem in the first half," Kompany told Sky. "But the second half, my god."
Kompany said his players ran 6 kilometres more than Leipzig in the second period.
"It was pure old school mentality - running, battling, tackling."
Manuel Neuer, 40 in March, also made two world class saves in what could be his final season.
"You can't praise him enough," Kompany said.
