Conditions are set for a tense, hard-hitting postseason showdown in Seattle
Seattle will wake up to foggy conditions before sunshine breaks through in time for the 49ers–Seahawks Wild Card playoff matchup, setting the stage for a chilly but dry afternoon at Lumen Field.
The day will begin with dense fog and temperatures in the upper 30s, according to AccuWeather, with early-morning visibility dropping as low as half a mile and air quality forecast as poor.
No precipitation is expected — a positive sign for both offenses — and the fog is expected to burn off by late morning.
By kickoff, conditions should be far more favorable. Skies will be mostly sunny with light north winds around 7 mph and occasional gusts up to 12 mph.
Afternoon temperatures are expected to peak at 52 degrees around mid-afternoon, with a RealFeel of 51, providing crisp but manageable football weather. Clear skies will carry into the evening as temperatures slide back into the low 40s.
Both teams, however, will take the field shorthanded.
The 49ers ruled out All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner with an ankle injury, a major blow to San Francisco’s defensive core. Safety Ji’Ayir Brown is also out with a hamstring injury after missing all practices this week.
Seattle will be without offensive lineman Josh Jones (knee), who did not practice all week, along with tight end Elijah Arroyo (knee) and linebacker Chazz Surratt (ankle).
Seahawks backup quarterback Sam Darnold is listed as questionable with an oblique injury after returning to limited practice Thursday.
San Francisco has four players carrying questionable designations: wide receivers Jacob Cowing (hamstring) and Ricky Pearsall (knee), linebacker Luke Gifford (quad), and linebacker Dee Winters (ankle). All four practiced in some capacity during the week.
Several players appeared on injury reports without game-status designations and are expected to play. For Seattle, tackle Charles Cross (hamstring/knee), linebacker Ernest Jones (illness), and cornerback Riq Woolen (oblique) are anticipated to be available. The 49ers expect Trent Williams to play through a hamstring injury, while defensive end Keion White is expected to suit up despite groin and hamstring issues.
With clear skies, cold air, and key defensive absences on both sides, conditions are set for a tense, hard-hitting postseason showdown in Seattle.
