There’s always something brewing in Rickie Fowler’s bag, sometimes it’s just not what you expect. While most players chase technology, Fowler decided to go a little vintage. And not just for show.

Fresh off a top-15 finish at the Open Championship, Fowler brought more than just momentum to the 3M Open. He showed up in Minnesota carrying something that made even seasoned reporters do a double-take.

During a pre-tournament chat, Dan Evans, the Dan’s Golf World Show host, quickly caught on. “I saw something interesting coming out of the bag,” the reporter said. “An old school club, is that something you're experimenting with?”

Fowler smiled. “Actually, she’s brand new,” he said. “I play with Persimmons a bit at home sometimes… it’s a bit of fun just to go out and play a little bit of throwback.”

Turns out, he owns a few Bellottas and Professionals and still loves the feel of old gear. “I might drive it better with Persimmon. I’m not sure what it is. I hit them well,” he added.

While he’s not ready to ditch modern gear completely, Fowler’s nod to golf’s roots adds a unique flavor to his game. “I’ve always enjoyed the history of the game,” he said. “Hickories are probably too much for me, though.”

He tees off Thursday at TPC Twin Cities alongside Tony Finau and Taylor Pendrith at 8:29 a.m. ET, followed by a 1:54 p.m. start on Friday. The 3M Open is one of the last FedEx Cup stops before the playoffs. And yes, people will be watching what’s in that bag.

Off the course, Fowler made headlines when Yeti Coolers announced him as their newest ambassador. The Texas-based brand welcomed him with a slick Instagram video. Fowler reposted it with a simple message: “Stoked to be part of the team.”

A Persimmon in the bag. A Yeti on the bottle. Rickie Fowler’s keeping things cool, literally and figuratively, as he heads into a critical stretch of the season.
