Capital Cup preview: Sport London E Benfica v Brentford Women

Brentford Women travel to Rectory Park on Sunday to face Sport London E Benfica in Capital Cup action (2.30pm kick-off GMT).

Riding the wave of four consecutive wins across all competitions, Carly Williams’ side head into Sunday’s contest against fellow London and South East Premier outfit Sport London full of confidence.

Following back-to-back triumphs in the intermediate section of the competition the past two seasons, Brentford will now contest the senior section of the Capital Cup.

Sunday’s clash is the first round of this season’s campaign, with 16 sides eyeing their place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Last time out

A 4-0 league win over Dorking Wanderers at Meadowbank Football Ground last time out saw Brentford make it four consecutive wins.

Alissa Down launched a stunning long-range free-kick to open the scoring, Freya Worsley then adding a brace either side of half-time.

Worsley added an assist to her tally late on as she played through to Asees Sangha, who finished well.

Previously in the Capital Cup, the Bees fought out a tough 4-2 win over Farnham Town on penalties.

Nikki Woods, Ashley Cheatley and Chloe Logie each scored in the game. Farnham matched it with three goals of their own to leave the score 3-3 after 90 minutes, and the game was sent straight to penalties.

Two important saves from goalkeeper Sophie Boycott allowed Cheatley to score the winning penalty, following on from Woods, Maddie Phillips and Carolin Engelhard, who also found the back of the net.

Sport London come into Sunday’s clash 10th in the LSE Premier table with two wins, a draw and 12 losses from their 15 games so far.

They sit four points from the relegation zone, with Newhaven in 11th with three points. They hold four games in hand on Sport London.

Brentford and Sport London fought out a tight promotion battle in the 2023/24 season, the latter edging the Bees out by one point to claim the LSE Division One North crown.

Brentford Women B return to Capital Cup action on Sunday when they travel to Dulwich Sports Ground to face Kenningwell United (2pm kick-off GMT).

Competing in the junior section of the competition, Sunday will be a third-round contest, Tommy Ryan-Maynard’s side eyeing a place in the Round of 16 with a victory.

With a loss and a win coming since the new year for the Bees, a second-consecutive victory would begin a strong wave of momentum leading into back-to-back Greater London Division One South clashes.

Last time out

Brentford booked their place in the next round of the JGMT Cup last time out thanks to a 5-2 comeback win over Comets at Bedfont Sports Club.

After going 2-0 down inside 30 minutes, the Bees responded through goals from Leah Robertson and Liberty Morrice-Bartlett to equalise before half-time.

Kirsty Matthews gave the side the lead after the break, before Morrice-Bartlett and Elsa Lesnard scored to secure an impressive win.

Previously in the Capital Cup, Brentford dominated en route to a 10-0 win over South Park (Reigate).

Marta Boabonay and Remmi Gardner each scored a hat-trick, while Georgia Wood and Matthews added a brace each.

Kenningwell sit seventh in the Greater London Division One South table coming into Sunday, with five wins, a draw and five losses to their name.

After a walkover in the first round, Kenningwell fought out a 3-2 win over South London Laces-Atlantics in the second round to book their place against the Bees.
