There are many reasons why the Toronto Blue Jays are in first place in the AL East with 60 games left, but George Springer is one of the main ones. The 35-year-old is slashing .283/.377/.500 with 17 homers and 55 RBI over 96 games, and is on pace for his best statistical finish since 2019.

Springer went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored in Toronto's 8-4 win over the New York Yankees on Wednesday, and he now has hits in five of his last six games. The outfielder's .877 OPS also ranks 18th in baseball.

Springer also showed off his mobility when he scored from first base on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s double in the fourth inning. Toronto manager John Schneider spoke about the veteran's hustle postgame, via MLB.com's Keegan Matheson.

"To see the old man round the pillows was pretty awesome," he said.

Springer leads the Blue Jays in homers, OPS, and stolen bases (12). Meanwhile, the 6-foot-1-inch, 220-pounder is second with 60 runs and 49 walks, and he hasn't been caught stealing this season.

Toronto out-hit New York 10-5 on Wednesday, while New York also had four errors against Toronto's one. Blue Jays starting pitcher Chris Bassitt allowed four runs (three earned) in 7.1 innings before the bullpen tossed a shutout for the rest of the game.

Toronto is now four games ahead of the Yankees for first place in the AL East ahead of Thursday's bout with the Detroit Tigers.
