Speaking on El Larguero, Alvaro Benito delivered one of the most forceful critiques yet of the dynamics inside Real Madrid following Xabi Alonso’s dismissal, placing responsibility squarely on the squad.

“I think Xabi Alonso’s dismissal is a victory for the players who feel they have the authority to believe that a style or certain obligations can’t really be imposed on them,” Benito said. The issue is structural and cultural, not only tactical.

Benito warned that Madrid are no longer operating from a position of superiority. “Now the rest of the teams have better players than you and are more tactically rigorous than you,” he said, adding that even in past seasons Madrid lived dangerously. “With world-class players, Madrid was already playing on the edge.”

The former Madrid player stressed that authority must be reestablished. “Either the players understand that the coach has to impose himself, or I see success as very difficult,” he said. “It’s worrying because many players are well below their level.”

Benito returned repeatedly to the same concern: “The players feel they have the authority to believe obligations can’t be imposed on them.”
