Why Liverpool could still consider an interim manager if Slot’s run turns

Arne Slot’s first campaign at Liverpool has been turbulent, and although results have improved in recent weeks, concerns inside and outside Anfield have not fully disappeared. The Dutchman endured a severe downturn late last year, losing nine of 12 matches, yet Fenway Sports Group chose to keep faith in their manager.

Since then, Liverpool have responded with an 11-game unbeaten run, with their last defeat coming in November. Even so, the performances have failed to convince large sections of the fanbase, leaving ongoing uncertainty about how long the club’s patience would last should another slump arrive.

Why an interim solution remains a possible scenario

FSG are widely regarded as cautious decision-makers, and that approach has been reflected in their intention to remain quiet during the January transfer window despite several injury concerns. That stance suggests Slot is likely to stay in charge for the remainder of the 2025/26 season, even if results remain inconsistent.

However, journalist David Lynch told Anfield Index that an interim appointment cannot be dismissed if circumstances deteriorate sharply again. He explained that ownership previously decided Slot offered a better option than any temporary replacement during the nine-defeats-in-12 spell, but added that if a similar collapse were repeated — particularly another run of nine losses in 12 matches — the club would move for an interim manager in order to halt the decline.

Steven Gerrard emerges as a potential short-term option

When discussing possible candidates, Lynch suggested that Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard could be approached as a stabilising figure to see the season out if drastic action became necessary. He stressed that while an interim solution might not guarantee success, Liverpool cannot afford to tolerate repeated losing streaks of that scale within the same campaign.

Supporters have already called for Gerrard’s return following the 2-2 draw with Fulham earlier this season, and the former captain has publicly stated that he would assist the club “with anything” they required. Whether that scenario ever materialises remains uncertain, but the door has clearly been left open should Liverpool’s situation unravel again.
