MOTM (Not a) Poll: BVB Stroll Past a Troubled Werder Bremen

A convincing 3-0 victory felt good on top of the draw against Frankfurt.

In the Bundesliga, there are no breaks, and before we could even digest Friday’s 3-3 draw against Frankfurt, BVB were once again on the field, this time on home soil against Horst Steffen’s Werder Bremen side. Die Werderaner came into this game in poor form, having not scored the last two games. Dortmund had something to prove themselves, after two leads were blown against Frankfurt last Friday, resulting in just a single point. The first 45 minutes could only be characterized as a big mess. Almost every pass was misplaced in a messy end-to-end affair. Luckily, Ryerson has a good foot for crossing, and Schlotterbeck decided to have a field day. The German international headed in the Norwegians corner for 1-0 after 11 minutes—a result that would stand until the players went into the break. The second half looked much better with BVB pinning Werder back and defending with high discipline. A great effort from Sabitzer inside the box and a big mistake for Guirassy to capitalize on meant the end result stood at 3-0. Maybe a little favorable for BVB, but very deserved nonetheless.

Here are my nominations for MOTM.

Nico Schlotterbeck

Scored the first goal and had an overall amazing game. Almost everything he did in both offense and defense was done with absolute precision and intent. Reminded me a bit of that Mats Hummels performance against AC Milan if anyone remembers that one. World class defender with a ridiculous bottom level.

Julian Ryerson

Was switched to the left side today and handled it brilliantly. Almost all of Werder’s attacks went through BVB’s right side, and whenever they did try and challenge Ryerson, he usually came out on top. Delivered an assist and almost got an additional one. No wonder why he’s on many European team’s radar these days.

Fabio Silva

No goal for Silva once again today, but I thought he was involved in most good things running through BVB’s offense. Almost got an assist and had some very nice moments of interplay with his team mates. He adds a strong dimension to BVB’s game that we haven’t really had for quite a while. Good to see that it seemed like him and Guirassy worked quite well together in the later stages of the 2nd half.

Marcel Sabitzer

I think Sabitzer had a sort of under the radar game. He did get into some very good positions, and he was accordingly awarded in the end. Also led BVB’s press in midfield and did not much wrong in possession despite the team being a bit disjointed as a whole—especially in the 1st half.
