Arizona still has a ways to go to compete with the likes of schools like USC for top tier high school recruits. That may change someday, but for now the Wildcats are fine with getting some of those guys out of the portal.

The UA has picked up a commitment from ex-USC linebacker Matai Tagoa’i, a 4-star prospect from the 2025 class. He’ll have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Tagoa’i was ranked by 247Sports as the No. 102 player in the 2025 class as well as the nation’s 6th-best linebacker and No. 8 prospect. From San Clemente, Calif., he picked the Trojans over Texas, Utah and Washington.

Tagoa’i appeared in nine games as a true freshman, logging 93 snaps with 35 on defense as either an edge rusher, linebacker or slot corner.

The third linebacker the UA has picked up from the portal, Tagoa’i is also the second transfer from USC. The Wildcats also signed wide receiver DJ Jordan, himself a former 4-star prospect from the 2024 class.

The UA is up to 15 known commitments from the NCAA transfer, seven on defense. It has 19 players from the 2025 roster in the portal.
