The Tecumseh Indians honored those battling cancer with a win over Lenawee County rival Adrian on Cancer Awareness Night.
TECUMSEH ― In a blur of pink, worn by the Tecumseh girls basketball team in remembrance of Cancer Awareness, the Indians used a big first quarter and huge games from freshman Delaney Brown and junior Addi Zajac to pull away from the Adrian Maples on the way to a 60-37 win.
Tecumseh controlled the game from the opening tip, outscoring Adrian 31-3 in the first quarter to take early control. The Maples were able to slow things down in the second quarter as Tecumseh took a 13-12 advantage in the second stanza to build a 44-15 lead at the half.
Tecumseh put the game away with a shutdown third quarter on defense, only allowing two Adrian points enroute to the 14-2 third quarter, extending their lead to 58-17 after three quarters. The Indians emptied the bench in the fourth quarter while Adrian continued to battle to the final whistle, with the Maples taking the final quarter 13-9 to find the final score of 60-37.
Interesting Statistics
Tecumseh’s largest lead of the game came at the 7:05 mark of the fourth quarter as they extended their lead to 43 points before Adrian settled in and closed the score with a 13-9 fourth quarter effort.
Tecumseh dominated the paint, outscoring Adrian 32-12 down low while also taking advantage of the Maples’ 21 turnovers for 31 points. Adrian meanwhile only managed two points off of Tecumseh’s eight turnovers.
Tecumseh won the battle of the boards 30-25, but it was the second chance points that made the difference as the Indians had 14 second chance points to Adrian’s three.
Tecumseh shot out the lights in their home gym, hitting 50.9% of their shots, including 34.8% from 3-point land. Adrian finished the night shooting 28.1% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc.
Top Performers
Delaney Brown, Tecumseh - Brown led all scorers with 21 points, thanks to 9 of 12 shooting from the field. Brown also added three assists, three steals, and three rebounds in the win.
Ella Salenbien, Adrian – Salenbien led the Maples effort with seven points and 10 rebounds in a solid all-around effort.
Addi Zajac, Tecumseh – Zajac just missed a triple-double in the Tecumseh win, however she did record a dominant double-double with 16 points scored and 15 rebounds. Zajac finished the night with seven steals to come up just short of the triple double. Zajac also added three assists and two blocks.
Amor Sanchez, Adrian – Sanchez led the Adrian offensive effort with nine points to go along with four rebounds
Makayla Schlorf, Tecumseh – Schlorf just missed hitting double digits with nine points to go along with four assists and four rebounds before fouling out in the win.
Tatum Borton, Adrian – Borton had a solid night with five points and four rebounds to go along with two steals in her 22 minutes played.
Chloe Bullinger, Tecumseh – Bullinger facilitated the Tecumseh offense, leading the team with six assists to go along with five points and two rebounds.
What’s Next?
With the loss, Adrian falls to 6-2 overall on the season. The Maples will return to action Tuesday, Jan. 13, when they host Pinckney.
Tecumseh improves to 8-1 on the season and will undoubtedly remain in the top 10 in the state rankings. The Indians will return to action Tuesday when they travel to face Chelsea.
