Manchester City’s Oscar Bobb may have received a significant blow to any hopes of making a big switch to the German top-flight this month.

The 22-year-old has been linked with a January departure from the Etihad Stadium, with City expected to confirm the signing of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth for £62.5 million on Friday after the Ghana international passed a medical in Manchester on Thursday.

Since starting each of Manchester City’s opening trio of Premier League games this season, Bobb has struggled for a regular look-in as the likes of Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku discovered their best form and went on to establish themselves as one of the first names on Pep Guardiola’s teamsheet.

Bobb burst onto the scene after netting an injury-time winner for the Blues away at Newcastle in December 2023 – a pivotal victory on the road for Manchester City en route to a record fourth successive Premier League title.

The Oslo-born attacker, who came through Manchester City’s academy ranks, spent nearly the entirety of the 2024-25 campaign on the sidelines after suffering a leg break in training in the days that followed Bobb starring in Manchester City’s FA Community Shield win over Manchester United.

After briefly returning to fitness in the spring of 2025, Bobb suffered a hamstring injury that delayed his return to a substitute appearance in City’s 2-0 win over Leicester City in April, with the Blues finishing what Guardiola has repeatedly classed as his most challenging season in management in third place in the Premier League table.

Bobb made a fine start to the season, impressing in City’s opening day 4-0 win away at Wolves, but has since failed to live up to expectations as executives at the Etihad Stadium field interest in the academy graduate as the January transfer window progresses. The forward is currently recovering from an injury he sustained against Brentford in December.

With Semenyo’s arrival set to strengthen competition in the wide attacking areas, Bobb’s development will be best served by a departure from the Etihad Stadium as Borussia Dortmund express a strong interest in the Norway international.

According to the information of SPORTBild, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness, while Dortmund have held an ‘intensive internal discussion’ about Bobb, the Norwegian’s price tag makes a move ‘unlikely’.

It is claimed that the signing of the versatile winger would end up costing around €70 million, and as such placing Bobb well beyond Dortmund’s reach, with the fee made up of an initial transfer payment, salary and agent fees.

Manchester City will stand firm on their valuation of Bobb, who is under a long-term contract at the club and could still play a role for Guardiola in the second-half of the season as the Blues fight for silverware on four fronts.

City’s Premier League title chances have come under question since the New Year, with Guardiola and co still searching for the first win of 2026 in the backdrop of a three consecutive draws against Sunderland, Chelsea and Brighton in the last week-and-a-half.
