The return of Dani Olmo could not have come at a better time for Barcelona.
After a difficult month on the sidelines, the former RB Leipzig man marked his comeback in style by scoring against Espanyol last weekend.
That goal did more than just help the team on the night, it reintroduced Olmo into the conversation ahead of the Spanish Super Cup.
Olmo had been unavailable for several weeks after suffering a dislocated shoulder, an injury picked up shortly after scoring in Barcelona’s win over Atletico Madrid.
It was a frustrating setback, especially at a time when he was beginning to settle into the role envisioned for him by Hansi Flick.
Now fully fit again, the focus is on continuity and avoiding further interruptions.
All eyes on Dani Olmo
Flick has always been clear about Olmo’s importance. In the coach’s view, the Spaniard is the most natural and complete option Barcelona have as a starting attacking midfielder.
At the same time, Flick is conscious of Olmo’s injury history, particularly when it comes to muscle issues, which means careful management remains essential.

This is where squad depth becomes crucial. The strong form of Fermin Lopez, the tactical flexibility of Raphinha, and the eventual return of Gavi give Flick room to rotate without lowering the team’s level.
Rather than rushing Olmo or overloading him, Barcelona can now protect one of their most decisive players while still remaining competitive.
A top player
Even with limited appearances, Olmo’s impact this season has been clear. In 18 matches across all competitions, he has already contributed five goals and two assists.
Those numbers only tell part of the story, as with Olmo on the pitch, Barcelona gain control in central areas, pose a greater goal threat, and become far more unpredictable in attack.
Defences struggle to read the team’s next move, and that uncertainty often creates space for others.
As such, Olmo’s return feels like a timely boost. The quality is there, the trust from Flick is evident, and the structure around him is now stronger, which are reasons enough to think that with him in the squad, the chances of winning the Super Cup are greater.
