After the game Courtnee Walton (Director of Operations) said that she was glad the Cards pulled off this victory otherwise they were going to have wasted all the 5-0-0 balloons and confetti that they bought to celebrate Coach Walz’s 500th victory. Fortunately no balloons had to be popped unused because the Cards had a commanding 85-60 victory over Virginia Tech.
Things were fairly tight in the first quarter but once again the bench players came in and gave the team a lift. By halftime the Cards had a 44-27 lead and they didn’t let down in the second half. Laura Ziegler led the team in scoring with 18 points to which she added 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Imari Berry had 13 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Anaya Hardy had 8 points and rebounds respectively.
Tajianna Roberts scored her first points of the game at the 6:21 mark in the third quarter but even so Louisville was up 57-31 at that point. Coach Walz said, “Tonight Virginia Tech did a great job trying to make it as difficult on Taj as possible, ” but he pointed out that “gave everybody else the opportunity to have space to work.”
He said, “If we can continue to keep our unselfishness and willingness to pass going it’s fun to watch.” When asked if he’s afraid if his team’s success will make them too cocky he responded, “Well I’ll try to make sure that doesn’t happen. I normally do a pretty good job of that.” He said, “this is a special group and I’m hoping we can stay grounded and realize that it’s not one player it’s all of us. We don’t have just one [star player]…. but we’ve got 7 or 8 that you HAVE to guard.”
Mackenly Randolph talked about the difference between this year’s team and last year’s. “I love all the girls that I’ve played with but this team has the chemistry and the willingness to work hard and get better every day. A lot of us are young but additions like Laura and Sklyar (Jones) and Reyna (Scott) are a perfect fit.” She added, “From the beginning of the season to now you can see how much we’ve improved.”
Next up the team travels to Miami. The game has been moved to 3PM so it doesn’t conflict with the Miami CFP game that night. It can be seen on ACC Network Extra.
