The Badgers got a commitment from one of the top running backs in the transfer portal on Saturday.
Commitments continue to roll in for the Wisconsin Badgers, who landed a pledge from Iowa State transfer running back Abu Sama on Saturday night after a weekend visit.
Sama, a junior this past season, has been highly productive in his three years at Iowa State. He had 732 yards and five touchdowns on 5.2 yards per carry this season. As a sophomore in 2024, he rushed for 587 yards and two touchdowns on 4.7 yards an attempt. In a lesser role as a freshman, Sama was an explosive machine, going for 614 yards and six touchdowns on just 84 attempts.
Standing 5’11, 210 pounds, Sama will be an immediate addition to the Badgers running back room, joining a rotation that currently includes sophomores Darrion Dupree and Gideon Ituka. Sama is a standout athlete, competing in track as a sprinter and long jumper in high school. He’ll bring both speed and explosiveness to the room in 2025.
He is considered the No. 11 running back in the transfer portal, according to 247Sports.
Wisconsin may not be done adding to its running back room, as visits with Florida State Seminoles transfer Kam Davis and USC Trojans transfer Bryan Jackson are on the docket. It may make sense to add two contributors, providing both speed and a bigger-bodied back to match what offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes wants in his offense.
Sama is the third commitment of the day for the Badgers, joining Iowa State transfer safety Carson Van Dinter and Bowling Green transfer tight end Jacob Harris.
