Anthony Joshua, a Nigerian British boxer, was injured in a car crash on Monday that killed two people.

Joshua, a two-time heavyweight champion, was in the back of a Lexus SUV on the expressway near Sagamu, Nigeria, when the vehicle was involved in a collision at around 11 a.m. local time, according to ESPN.

Police said that Joshua’s vehicle struck a stationary truck that was parked along the road. The two other people in the vehicle with Joshua, including the driver, were killed, per CNN.

“He was seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical attention. Tragically, two other passengers in the vehicle lost their lives at the scene,” a statement from Ogun State Police Command read.

The accident was the result of a burst tire on Joshua’s vehicle, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle and swerve into the truck, per ESPN.

Videos circulating online show Joshua being rescued from the wreckage, per CNN.

Joshua was in Nigeria after beating YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a sixth-round knockout. The fight between Joshua and Paul took place nine days ago in Miami.

Paul posted about Joshua’s crash on X.

“Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident,” he wrote.
