The Toronto Blue Jays have solidified the top spot in the AL East division this month, overtaking the New York Yankees while having a 12-3 record in July.

With a three-game lead on the Yankees entering a new week in the league, the Blue Jays are still monitoring the health of 2024 All-Star Anthony Santander, as the 30-year-old outfielder has been out since May 29 due to a shoulder subluxation after colliding with the outfield wall in a game against the Los Angeles Angels.

Santander is in his first season with the Blue Jays after Toronto signed him to a five-year, $92.5 million deal. He spent his first eight seasons in the big leagues with the Baltimore Orioles and broke out in 2024, hitting 44 home runs and 102 RBI.

His momentum hasn't followed over to the Blue Jays, however, and before sustaining his injury in late May, Santander had a .179 batting average, .273 on-base percentage, .304 slugging percentage, and a .577 OPS in his first 50 games with the Blue Jays.

However, Blue Jays' manager John Schneider provided an update on Santander on Monday, saying, "Anthony Santander is still a couple of weeks away from hitting and he’ll be evaluated 'week to week' from here," according to Blue Jays reporter Keegan Matheson.

Matheson also mentioned that "there aren't a ton of weeks left."

Although the Blue Jays have managed without 2024 All-Star Anthony Santander this season, his switch-hitting ability would help Toronto bolster their home run count this season. The Blue Jays currently sit at 18th in the majors in home runs this season with 105.

July won't be a realistic time for the Blue Jays to announce Santander's return to the lineup, but expect him to come back sometime in August while Toronto tries to maintain the top spot in the AL East.
