Designated hitter Kerry Carpenter is in his fourth season with the Detroit Tigers after making his MLB debut in 2022.
The left-handed power bat has primarily operated as a platoon bat who dominated right-handed pitching. Last season, in 87 games for Detroit, he hit .284 with a .932 OPS, 18 home runs and 57 RBIs.
He also starred in the postseason. In the ninth inning of Game 2 of the AL Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians, Carpenter crushed a three-run homer off closer Emmanuel Clase. The 423-foot shot to right field gave the Tigers a 3–0 lead and clinched the victory.
This season, the 27-year-old has transitioned into an everyday player, thanks to his elite production and offensive prowess.
On July 1, Carpenter suffered a right hamstring strain during a game against the Minnesota Twins when he stretched a hit into a triple. He had experienced hamstring tightness, but this strain prompted the Tigers to place him on the 10-day injured list. The Tigers opted for the cautious approach.
Before Tuesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit announced Carpenter was beginning a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo.

Through 78 games this season, Carpenter is batting .257 with a .780 OPS, 16 home runs and 32 RBIs. Although his production has dipped, it’s his first full season in an everyday role, so some regression was expected.
The Tigers could certainly use Carpenter’s bat. They have dropped seven of their last 10 games yet still sit atop the AL Central.
