CTA find Real Madrid to be one of the most harmed teams by refereeing decisions

Refereeing in top-flight football is not a simple task, especially given how much rides on every decision that must be made in a split second.

With the great responsibility, needless to say, comes great criticism and this season has been no different for the referees in La Liga.

The Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) has constantly worked to make decisions more transparent and less ambiguous.

One of their moves towards the same was the introduction of ‘Review Time’ – an audiovisual space where controversial refereeing moments from La Liga are reviewed with time, cameras, and appropriate rules to determine the accurate decision.

Real Madrid are the most harmed

As relayed via MARCA, the CTA have so far acknowledged 10 mistakes from the 51 selected controversial moments that were reviewed.

As per the same, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have benefitted from refereeing errors while Real Madrid have stood to lose.

The incident that was acknowledged as an error against Los Blancos was Dean Huijsen’s sending off against Real Sociedad.

While they understand why VAR did not intervene in the ‘grey’ play, they felt the on-field referee should have stuck with a yellow card and not shown red.

Only Rayo Vallecano have had more decisions go against them, and it is clear that Real Madrid are the only giant who have stood to lose from refereeing errors.

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have had two and one decision go in their favour, respectively.

In terms of ‘correct decisions’, the referees found the decision to be reversed to benefit Real Madrid correctly on one occasion – Eric Garcia’s handball at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The rest of the referees’ correct decisions involving Real Madrid involved either letting play continue after an incident or disallowing something that had initially benefited the team.
