Both Kingsley Enagbare and Lukas Van Ness finished with more snaps played than Rashan Gary on Saturday.
The Green Bay Packers got banged up against the Baltimore Ravens. Quarterback Malik Willis (shoulder), receiver Dontayvion Wicks (concussion), defensive tackle Jordon Riley (Achilles), cornerback Nate Hobbs (knee), cornerback Kamal Hadden (ankle) and safety Zayne Anderson (ankle) all got injured and didn’t return to action for the Packers. On top of that, there were injuries coming into the game, and Green Bay played the reserve offense to end the second half, as they were already down 41-24 in the closing minutes of the game.
So let’s go through the Packers’ snap counts against the Ravens, which might have been Green Bay’s last game at Lambeau Field this year, and talk through what happened in the game position-by-position.
Quarterback
- 36: Malik Willis
- 8: Clayton Tune
Obviously, starting quarterback Jordan Love missed this game due to a concussion. Willis stepped in and played well, but suffered a non-contact reaggravation of his shoulder injury from last week, which forced practice squadder Clayton Tune into the lineup. After the game, head coach Matt LaFleur said that Willis could have been sent back in, and also that Love hasn’t passed the concussion protocol yet.
Running Back
- 20: Chris Brooks (13 SPT)
- 16: Emanuel Wilson (6 SPT)
- 12: Josh Jacobs
It sure seems like the Packers are taking it easy with Josh Jacobs, even when the division was still on the line. Jacobs has been battling a multi-month knee injury at this point and was out-snapped by both Chris Brooks, usually a blocking back, and Emanuel Wilson, the team’s route-runner. I’m going to go ahead and assume that Jacobs won’t be getting many opportunities against the Minnesota Vikings this week.
Receiver
- 26: Christian Watson
- 25: Romeo Doubs (1 SPT)
- 24: Matthew Golden
- 22: Jayden Reed
- 17: CB Bo Melton (11 SPT)
- 3: Dontayvion Wicks
With Dontayivion Wicks getting injured early and Savion Williams being out with an illness, Bo Melton again had to play offense in this game. The thin depth chart also helped get Matthew Golden on the field more. On 24 plays, Golden finished with one reception for 12 yards.
Tight End
- 28: Josh Whyle (8 SPT)
- 18: Luke Musgrave
- 7: Drake Dabney (7 SPT)
With John FitzPatrick suffering a season-ending Achilles injury, the Packers brought up practice squadder Drake Dabney for this game. He got most of his playing time in garbage time, though. Instead, Josh Whyle really served the role of the starting tight end in a rotation with Luke Musgrave.
Offensive Line
- 44: Jordan Morgan (4 SPT)
- 44: Anthony Belton (4 SPT)
- 38: Rasheed Walker (4 SPT)
- 38: Aaron Banks (4 SPT)
- 38: Sean Rhyan (4 SPT)
- 8: Darian Kinnard (4 SPT)
- 6: Jacob Monk (4 SPT)
- 6: Donovan Jennings
The starting unit was Rasheed Walker, Aaron Banks, Sean Rhyan, Anthony Belton and Jordan Morgan (left to right) with Zach Tom still dealing with knee and back injuries. Kinnard only got in on two plays as an extra tight end, with one of them being the first play of the game: A deep shot to receiver Romeo Doubs. Both Jacob Monk and Donovan Jennings were on the bench watching the offense until garbage time.
Defensive End
- 58: Kingsley Enagbare (7 SPT)
- 46: Lukas Van Ness (8 SPT)
- 33: Rashan Gary
- 9: Brenton Cox Jr. (9 SPT)
- 0: Arron Mosby (21 SPT)
It sure seems like Rashan Gary got benched! Even without Micah Parsons in the mix, Gary only played 33 snaps in this game, fewer than either Kingsley Enagbare or Lukas Van Ness. In total, Gary only played 45 percent of the Packers’ defensive snaps in this game. This was probably his last game in green and gold at Lambeau.
Rookie draft picks Collin Oliver and Barryn Sorrell were both healthy scratches in this game.
Defensive Tackle
- 55: Karl Brooks (12 SPT)
- 51: Colby Wooden (8 SPT)
- 32: Warren Brinson (7 SPT)
- 15: Quinton Bohanna
- 11: Jordon Riley (1 SPT)
The Packers had five defensive tackles up for this game, but rookie Nazir Stackhouse was a healthy scratch. It sure seems like Stackhouse is now DT6 on the depth chart, which would be DT7 if Devonte Wyatt were healthy. Green Bay is basically redshirting him this year, hoping that he takes the next step next summer.
The Packers played an extra defensive tackle on 16 plays to try to stop the Ravens’ rushing attack. The extra body did not help.
Linebacker
- 74: Edgerrin Cooper (10 SPT)
- 74: Quay Walker (7 SPT)
- 47: Isaiah McDuffie (21 SPT)
- 2: Ty’Ron Hopper (14 SPT)
Green Bay only had four linebackers up, following the placement of Kristian Welch on the injured reserve. To make up for that, both Edgerrin Cooper and Quay Walker had to play a lot more special teams snaps for the team this week. Isaiah McDuffie was on the field nearly two-thirds of the time, as Baltimore was fine playing a heavy-on-heavy game against the Packers.
Cornerback
- 72: Keisean Nixon (7 SPT)
- 57: Carrington Valentine (2 SPT)
- 10: Nate Hobbs (4 SPT)
- 6: Kamal Hadden (10 SPT)
The physicality of Carrington Valentine, when facing running back Derrick Henry, was a major problem in this game. The Packers first tried to bench Valentine situationally to get Nate Hobbs on the field. Then Hobbs got hurt.
Then the Packers benched Valentine to get Kamal Hadden on the field. Then Hadden got hurt.
Green Bay is now down to three healthy cornerbacks on the 53-man roster, and one of them is Bo Melton, who has only played receiver and special teams this year.
Safety
- 74: Xavier McKinney (12 SPT)
- 51: Evan Williams (3 SPT)
- 37: Javon Bullard (5 SPT)
- 0: Kitan Oladapo (14 SPT)
- 0: Zayne Anderson (2 SPT)
Before the Nate Hobbs injury, the Packers were trying to get Javon Bullard some snaps at safety to help stop the run, which displaced Evan Williams. After the Hobbs injury, though, Bullard had to move back into the slot, in place of Hobbs, and Bullard and Williams shared the safety position situationally.
Anderson also went down with an injury. Everyone is hurt. This team is very banged up.
