John Schneider has never won the NFL’s Executive of the Year award. On the strength of 12-3 and a consecutive successful quarterback flip, he has finally landed himself on the short list of favorites.
Nearly every NFL team weighed in this week about their thoughts as to who is most likely to win various awards, thanks to Tom Pelissero’s anonymous survey. 21 General Managers themselves were part of the process.
Out of 30 votes gathered, 19.5 front offices around the league feel John Schneider is this year’s Executive of the Year.
Who voted half? I don’t know, but Les Snead got the other half vote, so you take a guess.
19.5 votes for Schneider, and second place was two. I did not make that up.
The league feels what many have felt throughout this season, that he’s done something truly impressive.
The conversation began primarily with the three big moves: Geno Smith for Sam Darnold, DK Metcalf for Cooper Kupp, Tyler Lockett for nobody.
Then the rookies started to contribute.
Then people began to notice DeMarcus Lawrence. In the conversation for the best free agent pickup of the year.
Then the Rashid Shaheed trade happened. Shaheed, when placed on a functional franchise with coherent special teams play, made the Pro Bowl in six games.
It’s four franchise-boosting drafts in a row now, and a team that controls its own destiny for two weeks to secure the number one seed in the NFC.
This is not the official vote, but the league is officially on notice: John Schneider is back in his bag.
