Cubs Trade Idea Brings in 35 Home Run All-Star to Replace Matt Shaw

Chicago Cubs trade idea brings in 35-home-run MLB All-Star to replace Matt Shaw.

Cubs Trade Idea Brings in 35 Home Run All-Star to Replace Matt Shaw originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Is Matt Shaw a bad player?

Obviously not, but the youngster is struggling with his first cup of coffee in Major League Baseball, and it's something the Chicago Cubs have to factor in.

The last thing the Cubs want to do is continue to hurt his confidence, which the front office has to keep in the back of their minds heading into the trade deadline.

With the hope that the Cubs will move at the deadline to find a competent third baseman, they could pursue a few options. At the top of that list should be Eugenio Suarez of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who, if traded, will undoubtedly be the best player dealt.

When recently looking at a potential trade to replace Shaw, Heavy Sports proposed the idea of the Cubs landing Suarez, noting that the benefits of Suarez could be in more ways than one.

They noted that they might not have to give up a ton to trade for him because he's a rental.

“Another benefit of the Cubs swinging a deal for the third baseman is that he is a rental, which may lower his cost a bit. Even then, trading for a player having such a good year will cost a pretty penny. But if the Cubs can pull it off, the argument can easily be made that they have the deepest and best lineup in the game,” they wrote.

In some ways, that's wishful thinking.

The Diamondbacks have a reason to sell, but there's also an argument to be made that if things go as they could, they might sneak into the postseason.

They also understand that nearly every contending team will be looking for an offensive upgrade, and Suarez fits that description. Selling low on him wouldn't make sense from Arizona's perspective.
