Liverpool team news vs Wolves

Liverpool’s main area of concern is up front now that record signing Alexander Isak has been ruled out for a couple of months with a broken leg.

With Cody Gakpo a major doubt and Mohamed Salah away with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations, Arne Slot looks short of options in attack.

Slot will hope that Conor Bradley’s injury is not too serious after he limped out of the 2-1 win at Tottenham on Saturday, especially with Joe Gomez sidelined. Midfielder Wataru Endo is the only other definite non-runner for Saturday’s fixture.

Ekitike eases pressure on Slot

The pressure on Slot has been eased with three straight wins and striker Hugo Ekitike can take his share of responsibility for that.

Ekitike, an £80m summer signing from Eintracht Frankfurt, has scored 11 goals in his debut season at Liverpool, including five in his last three Premier League appearances.

But it isn’t just the France international’s goals which have helped hoist the champions back into the top five and brought a smile to Slot’s face.

“People are only focused on the goals but he helps us out defensively as well and that’s important from a No.9,” said the Dutchman.

“His ability to score, his technique, his speed, all these things, that’s just what he is. No one is surprised to see that.

“It’s how hard he works that’s a big help for the team as well.”

Ekitike can expect to be busier than ever over the coming weeks, with Isak injured and Salah away with Egypt.

That could mean Slot is keen to bring in reinforcements in the January transfer window, with heightened speculation that they may be able to lure Antoine Semenyo away from Bournemouth.
