A celebration for winning a Texas high school football state championship took a tragic turn, according to a report.

According to WFAA on Monday, an 18-year old Texas high school football player was arrested after admitting to accidentally shooting his teammate in celebration hours after of winning a UIL state championship last weekend.

The report, with information from a Dallas Police Department arrest warrant affidavit, says that the shooting took place after South Oak Cliff (TX) defeated Randle for the UIL Class 5A, Division 2 state championship game. The affidavit states that Xavier Mayfield, who is listed as a senior strong safety for the Golden Bears and had a interception in the state championship game, had turned toward a teammate while holding a rifle and a gunshot went off towards the bedroom where the victim was in, hitting him in the neck area.

Per the report, Mayfield is currently being held in a Dallas County Jail and being held on a $50,000 bond. 

The Golden Bears were celebrating winning their first state championship in two years as they defeated the Lions, 35-19, on Saturday afternoon at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Mayfield for the 2025 season had recorded 44 total tackles for the Golden Bears.

With the victory, South Oak Cliff had won their third state championship in program history.
