Kyle Schwarber says he doesn't expect to sign an in-season contract extension with the Philadelphia Phillies, despite the mutual interest.

The Philadelphia Phillies would love to retain designated hitter and All-Star hero Kyle Schwarber. He's one of the best sluggers in baseball, and keeping him long-term is something that both Schwarber and the Phillies are interested in doing.
With both sides open to staying together, there were some questions about whether the team could get an extension done in the middle of the season.
But, in a piece from Paul Casella of MLB.com, Schwarber's comments shed light on such a potential deal, and why it's unlikely to happen mid-season.
"To be honest with you," Schwarber said, "It's probably something you just wait until the end [of the season]. You just want to feel like you're pouring everything you have into your team, and you don't want to be distracted by anything else."
While both sides want to get a deal done, the likely scenario for an extension is in the offseason or after the season. Whether the Phillies are eliminated early or win the World Series, the Schwarber contract decision will be made afterwards.
Philadelphia's front office, owner, and the base all want Schwarber back. He wants to return as well. It's trending in the right direction, and while there's still a gap in contract talks, the mutual interest is a huge step towards retaining him.
Losing Schwarber, who has 32 home runs through 98 games this season, would be a tough blow. He's integral to the offense, and seeing him depart would put a huge dent in the offensive firepower in Philadelphia.
Keeping him is priority number one in the offseason, and while the mutual interest is a good sign, any official extension is unlikely to happen in the middle of the season.
Unfortunately, the Phillies fandom will have to wait until after the season to know whether the fan-favorite slugger is returning to the team after four incredible years since he signed in 2022.
