The Boilermakers summarily beat the Tigers to close out this year’s Indy Classic.
Purdue’s get-right tour went on in Indianapolis with an 88-60 win over Auburn on Saturday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Competing in the Indy Classic, which was effectively a Boilermakers home game, just about everything went right for the gold and black. The Boilers shot 55.9% from the field and 46.2% from long range with standout performances from starters and the bench.
Here’s three observations from the game.
Braden Smith’s passing
Smith goes for the passes others don’t and usually connects in the process.
Obviously the Boilermakers shot well, but it speaks to the quality of the looks they were able to generate, much of which came from Smith. He kept finding the hot hand and created for himself when appropriate, finishing with 11 points, five rebounds and 14 assists.
Speaking of the hot hand,
CJ Cox and Gicarri Harris’ shooting
This is why Purdue was able to blow out Auburn the way they did. Fletcher Loyer went an uncharacteristic 0-7 from long range, so CJ Cox and Gicarri Harris stepped up in his stead.
The two went 4/7 and 4/6 from long range, respectively, scoring 14 and 12 points on the night. It was good for a third of the Boilers’ 12 makes from 3.
Trey Kaufman-Renn’s scoring
There just aren’t a lot of teams that are going to be able to slow down Trey Kaufman-Renn when he’s on. He has the strength and skill to get a good look at the rim and the smarts to use both as best as he can.
He went 9/13 from the field, scoring 18 points while pulling down six rebounds and dishing out a single assist, a wide open dunk from Oscar Cluff.
