Bryan Moore steps down as Opelika (Ala.) head football coach

Another Alabama high school football head coach that led his team to the state championship game this past season will not be returning to the sidelines to the same team.

According to a report by AL.com, Bryan Moore has handed in his resignation as the head football coach at Opelika High School. Moore led the Bulldogs the last two seasons, compiling a 19-7 record and just recently led Opelika to the Class 7A state championship game, a 48-10 loss to national power Thompson.

Opelika Board of Education superintendent Dr. Kevin Davisreleased the following statement regarding Moore’s resignation as head coach:

“At an emergency meeting today, the Opelika City Schools Board of Education accepted Coach Bryan Moore’s resignation as head football coach. We are grateful to Coach Moore for his leadership of our student-athletes at Opelika High School. It is our goal as a school system to provide the best resources and experiences to our students and student-athletes.The search process will begin immediately to find the best possible fit to build on the success, character, and tradition of Opelika football. We wish Coach Moore well in his future endeavors.“

Opelika went 10-4 this past season as they made their run to the 7A state championship game. Moore did so behind a roster that featured 2027 talents Colby Key and Braiden Howard, respectively.

Before Moore got to Opelika, the last time the program had won 10 games was in 2020.

Moore becomes the third head coach from the recent AHSAA state championship games that won’t be returning to the team he just coached. The other two coaches are Rush Propst at Coosa Christian, which just brought back Mark O’Bryant as lead man, and Moody with Jake Ganus, who stepped down to accept the same position at Pell City.
