The New York Yankees figure to be looking for third basemen at the trade deadline, but they could also look at shortstop options to replace Anthony Volpe.
Volpe won a Gold Glove as a rookie, but in his three seasons, he has never been a great offensive player. This year, his offense is still below average, but his defense has also taken a dive.
He leads the American League in errors, but Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman have maintained faith in him. However, as the trade deadline approaches, FanSided's Rucker Harinegey suggested the Yankees try to get Willi Castro of the Minnesota Twins to replace Volpe in the short term.
"If the Yankees would prefer to roll the dice on a player with more offensive upside then Willi Castro should emerge as an intriguing trade candidate," wrote Harinegy. "The versatile Twin is in the midst of a quality offensive season and his left-handed bat could play well inside the friendly confines of Yankee Stadium."
Castro is not a pure shortstop, but given who figures to be available at the trade deadline, he could be a solid option. He does not need to be a Gold Glover for the Yankees to play shortstop. He just has to be better than Volpe, which will not be hard this year.

Castro will be a free agent after the season and is having a better offensive season than he did during his All-Star season last year. He has a .785 OPS, and would clearly be an upgrade over Volpe offensively. The Yankees are not likely to give up on Volpe, but for the time being, it's hard to justify keeping him in the lineup every day.
