With F1’s rules allowing number changes, Verstappen opts for a single-digit look.
Max Verstappen was always going to have to change numbers for the 2026 season, after relinquishing his world title, but he will not be going back to #33.
Instead, Verstappen will switch to #3, as he bids to reclaim his crown.
Under the regulations, introduced in 2014, drivers choose a permanent number to run throughout their careers—but a clause was added ahead of 2026 whereby drivers can change numbers should they wish to do so.
Verstappen selected #33 ahead of his debut in 2015 and sported it through 2021; since then he has used #1 as was his right as the defending champion.
Verstappen would ordinarily have returned to #33 for 2026 but instead will take up the #3.
The #3 was previously run by Verstappen’s former teammate Daniel Ricciardo but the Australian left the sport mid-2024 and has since retired from competition.
“My favorite number has always been 3, apart from #1,” Verstappen said in an interview with Viaplay. “We can now swap, so it’ll be #3. #33 was always fine, but I just like one 3 better than two. I always said it represented double luck, but I’ve already had my luck in Formula 1.”
Newly crowned World Champion Lando Norris has opted to defend his title with the #1, rather than his personal #4.
World Champions have the choice whether to run #1 or their personal number; while Norris and predecessor Verstappen have taken #1, Lewis Hamilton opted to keep #44 during his spree as reigning champion.
Norris’ previous #4 is protected for as long as he remains champion, so that no other driver can use it.
The only rookie on the grid, Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad, was listed as #41 when he was announced by the team.
The official entry list for the 2026 season is due to be released Friday.
