He continues to be a name to know.
A popular potential connection in the transfer portal has been made by On3’s Pete Nakos. Tennessee could — or could not be — in quarterback market this offseason. That all depends on how the Joey Aguilar situation plays out in court. If Aguilar is not in the plans though, it’s obvious Tennessee is going to need a veteran passer.
Jake Merklinger entered the transfer portal on Wednesday, potentially leaving the Volunteers with just George MacIntrye and true freshman Faizon Brandon on the roster.
Considering the Knoxville ties to Brendan Sorsby’s family, it’s natural to connect those dots. Several have throughout the late fall, and now Nakos is as well.
“Viewed as one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the transfer portal, Texas Tech is the school to watch early on for Brendan Sorsby,” Nakos wrote on Thursday. “He’s also expected to evaluate the NFL draft, and Indiana and Tennessee are other schools to know.”
The 6-3, 225 pound quarterback is originally from Denton, Texas. He threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns last season as a junior, throwing only five picks. He added 580 yards on the ground with nine scores. It was Sorsby’s second straight season with 2,800 passing yards or more.
Notably, Sorsby started his college career at Indiana before Curt Cignetti arrived. So all three options Nakos lists make some sense. Tennessee was not listed as an option for other big quarterback names like Sam Leavitt, DJ Lagway or Dylan Raiola.
The transfer portal is set to open on January 2nd, but obviously (and unsurprisingly) talks are already being had. Expect plenty of portal news over these next two weeks as everyone gets in position for a wild first week in January.
