Jim Harbaugh Has Been Texting with Ex-Michigan Coach Sherrone Moore Since Arrest: 'It's a Tragedy'

Jim Harbaugh revealed that he has been in touch with his former assistant, Sherrone Moore, in the days since Moore's firing and arrest.

While on The Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday, Dec. 16, the Los Angeles Chargers coach shared that he has texted Moore, the former Michigan coach who was arrested and charged with felony home invasion, hours after the university fired him for having an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

“It’s a tragedy. The worst days of his life,” Harbaugh said, when asked about Moore’s “spirits.” “Keep it together and take care of your family. That’s the message. And getting spiritual guidance is really critical.”

For Harbaugh, who coached at Michigan for nine seasons and whose final year culminated with a national championship in 2023, the reality of Moore’s alleged transgressions are hard to digest — but he said he’s focused on his own responsibilities with the Chargers.

“I still don’t have my head wrapped around it. It’s a tragedy, and just praying for all concerned,” Harbaugh, 61, said. “I love my alma mater, I love Michigan and I love the Chargers, too. I would be doing a disservice if I wasn’t putting all my focus on this game. This is the most important game for us.”

The 10-4 Chargers next face the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

Harbaugh is not alone in his mixed emotions regarding the controversy.

Earlier this week, interim Michigan coach Biff Poggi shared with reporters that his players are going through it, as they prepare to take on Texas in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla. on Dec. 31.

"A lot of ... first disbelief, then anger, then really, what we're in right now is the kids, quite frankly, feel very betrayed, and we're trying to work through that," Poggi said, per ESPN.

He added, "I don't know that you can prepare for something like this. It's been complicated. I want to listen to them. I want to understand what the kids are feeling and what their parents are feeling, and so a lot of listening, and there's been a wide range of emotions, and we are going through those steps."

On Dec. 12, Moore was arraigned on charges of felony home invasion, misdemeanor stalking and entering without permission. During the arraignment, assistant prosecuting attorney Kati Rezmierski alleged that Moore made several "intimidating" and "terrifying" statements while breaking into the staffer's home earlier in the week, following her breaking up with him.
