The New York Mets hope to avoid a series sweep against the Cincinnati Reds.
Mets Fans Fear The Worst After Pete Alonso News originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The New York Mets came into Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds looking to reverse a troubling slide. After starting the season 45-24, one of the best records in baseball through mid-June, the team has unraveled over the last month. Since June 13, the Mets have gone just 10-20, the second-worst mark in the majors during that span, ahead of only the Washington Nationals.
Their offensive inconsistency has been a key issue and recent losses have seen growing frustration among fans and within the clubhouse. A once-promising season is now at risk of slipping away unless the Mets can find answers quickly.
Ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Reds, the Mets released their lineup—and fans immediately noticed the absence of Pete Alonso. Mark Vientos was listed as the starting first baseman, marking his first start at the position this season. Alonso, one of the team’s most important players, is hitting .276 this season with 21 home runs and remains a central figure in the Mets’ offense.
Shortly after, manager Carlos Mendoza provided clarity, announcing that Alonso is dealing with a right hand contusion and is considered day to day.

Despite the day-to-day designation, Mets fans are still fearing the worst.
“Team is falling apart,” one fan wrote.
“Very bad timing to have a hand contusion. Maybe that explains the rainbow throw he made yesterday,” another fan added.
“Um when did this contusion take place?” a third fan questioned.
“It's over,” another fan stated.
“See you in September,” another fan said.
