Luka Doncic had words about his future with the Los Angeles Lakers
Luka Doncic Silences Questions About NBA Future With Lakers Message originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Los Angeles Lakers made one of the biggest moves in NBA history when they acquired Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks in a February trade. The deal sent Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a future first-round pick to Dallas in exchange for the Slovenian star. It was a high-stakes move by the Lakers front office, one aimed at building the franchise around a younger superstar.
Doncic’s arrival immediately shifted expectations in Los Angeles. Despite limited time to build chemistry, he posted strong numbers through the remainder of the season and helped the Lakers secure the third seed in the Western Conference. His presence has already begun to influence the team’s long-term outlook, including offseason roster moves that brought in additional pieces like center Deandre Ayton to support a championship run.
With his contract extension window opening on Aug. 2, speculation has grown around Doncic’s future with the franchise. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Lakers are “a little bit stressed out” over the situation.
“If he does not sign it, you will see teams begin to open up maneuvers to try to chase Luka,” Windhorst said, suggesting that other front offices are closely monitoring the situation.
However, Doncic appears to have shut down the rumors in a new short film released by the Lakers. The four-minute video, titled Luka Doncic: Born to Compete, Destined to Dominate, offers a glimpse into his basketball journey—from his early days in Slovenia to his transition into an NBA star and eventual move to Los Angeles. The clip ends with Doncic being asked what he wants to be known for as a Laker.
“The guy that brought championships to the city, for sure,” Doncic answered.
With his response, Doncic appears to have shut down any speculation about his future in LA. For the five-time All-Star, he wants to be remembered for raising more banners as a Laker, a feat that many greats before him have achieved.
Doncic now prepares for his first full season in Los Angeles, set to lead the franchise alongside LeBron James. With a renewed focus on contention, the Lakers will hope to fend off stiff competition in the West and eventually capture their 18th championship next year. While the extension isn’t official yet, Doncic’s message strongly suggests it’s only a matter of time.
