Chicago Cubs predicted to lose top trade target, 31-home run slugger, to NL Central rival Milwaukee Brewers.
Cubs Predicted to Lose Top Trade Target, 31 Home Run Slugger to NL Central Rival Brewers originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Chicago Cubs are expected to be one of the many teams to show interest in Eugenio Suarez of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Suarez had an impressive first half in Arizona, earning an All-Star Game nod after blasting 31 home runs. He's continued to prove why he's one of the better power hitters in baseball, and will likely be the best third baseman traded.
Despite the interest from other teams, the Cubs could put together the best package for the right-handed slugger.
However, CBS Sports doesn't expect that to be the case, predicting Suarez to end up with the Cubs' division rival, the Milwaukee Brewers.
“The Brewers, currently in second place in the National League Central heading into the second half, or a team to watch out for. They're only one game back of the Cubs, sitting at 56-40. Rookie Caleb Durbin has come on strong the last few weeks, so the Brewers don't absolutely need a third baseman, but why not upgrade when a division title is within reach and you haven't won a postseason series since 2018?
“Trading for a third baseman when you don't need a third baseman qualifies as bold, I suppose. The D-backs are kinda sorta maybe hanging around the wild-card race. That said, the trade market is light on quality infielders. Cashing Suárez in as a trade chip in a seller's market makes sense. I'll say Suárez goes to the Brewers and the main piece in the return is righty Tobias Myers, who has been squeezed out of Milwaukee's deep rotation,” they wrote.
Losing Suarez wouldn't be the end-all be-all for the Cubs, but the last thing they want to happen is for him to end up in Milwaukee.
