Colts predicted to cut ties with Anthony Richardson for 70-TD 'exceptional decision maker' QB

The Colts are in a tough spot with their QB's this season. However, in the 2026 draft they could draft a huge prospect to set them up nicely for the future.

The Indianapolis Colts are heading into a season where the quarterback situation doesn’t appear particularly promising. If this were Anthony Richardson’s rookie year—back when the hype was still strong—it would be a different story. Bruce Arians believes the Florida product left college too early.

“Anthony, I think needed two more years of college... as a passer. I didn’t see him being able to beat anybody in 2-minute & 3rd down. If you can’t do that in the NFL you’re just an average guy,” Arians said.

Now, the Colts seem to be losing confidence in Richardson, especially after he left a game last season due to fatigue. In response, the team has brought in Daniel Jones, and the two quarterbacks will compete for the starting role. If this turns out to be Richardson’s final season in Indianapolis, ESPN’s Ryan Clark believes he could be a strong candidate to replace Aaron Rodgers in Pittsburgh next year.

With growing doubts and increased competition, this is a pivotal moment for Richardson to prove he belongs in the NFL.

“So, if there was ever a time for Richardson to put the pieces together in his development as a pro quarterback, now is certainly the moment to present that before he finds himself at risk of losing his starting job,” Sports Illustrated’s Jared Koch wrote.

The Colts aren’t expected to have a strong season. If that prediction holds true, they could be in a position to select a high-profile quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft. Owain Jones of Pro Football Network believes they may target Cade Klubnik from Clemson.

“His 36 passing scores are the most of any returning quarterback, while also only turning the ball over six times. The two-year starter is an exceptional decision-maker and remains calm, leading to a passer rating of 76.5 when pressured,” Jones wrote. “While Klubnik is undersized, listed at 6’2” and 200 pounds, he checks all the boxes. The Clemson quarterback can layer the football with touch and fire the ball into tight windows, leading receivers open with exceptional awareness and anticipation.”

Klubnik has put his trust in Dabo Swinney, and it’s paid off. The senior is aiming for a standout season before moving on to the next chapter. If the Colts do land him, they could be in excellent shape for the future.
