WNBA All-Star coach issues unexpected Caitlin Clark statement

Clark will miss the 3-Point Contest and the All-Star Game.

In a big blow to the league, Caitlin Clark's injury woes have precluded her from playing in Saturday's WNBA All-Star Game. WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert has named Washington Mystics guard Brittney Sykes to Clark's team as a replacement -- and though Sykes is having a career year to this point, Clark is the league's biggest draw.

While Sykes is replacing Clark in the All-Star Game, and Indiana Fever teammate Lexie Hull will participate in the 3-Point Contest on Friday night, Clark is on hand to support her All-Star teammates while she recovers from a right groin injury. The superstar guard hopes to be in position to face the New York Liberty next Tuesday.

Before Clark's latest injury, she pulled off a rare "coach's trade" during the All-Star team selection show. Clark "sent" head coach Cheryl Reeve to Napheesa Collier's team in exchange for Sandy Brondello -- who is now coaching a Clark-less squad of All-Stars.

But Clark is going to be involved. She may not be physically ready to play, but Brondello says Clark will get to try her hand at coaching.

"Unfortunate about Caitlin going into this game, but she’s gonna still have a great impact on this team," Liberty head coach Brondello told reporters about Clark's absence. "I will give the coaching hat to her as much as she wants, to be quite honest. We’re gonna play around with it a little bit."

While fans at Gainbridge Fieldhouse will miss out on the opportunity to watch Clark rain down threes on Friday and Saturday, "Coach Caitlin" will surely make her presence felt as she supports her All-Star selections in an unexpected way.
