Knicks may miss out on former All-Star guard

Ben Simmons appear to be a ‘long shot’ for the Knicks

The New York Knicks have already made several key additions to their bench unit this offseason, but one of their newest targets could slip away from them.

Three-time All-Star Ben Simmons has been heavily linked to the Knicks in recent weeks. However, as Newsday’s Steve Popper reports, Simmons appears to be a ‘long shot’ for the Knicks, noting that options such as Malcolm Brogdon, Russel Westbrook and Chris Paul are also in the mix, but also not seen as likely.

“The Knicks could use a solid backup point guard and they can choose among Malcolm Brogdon, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook and Ben Simmons,” Popper reported. “ Those last three may be fantasy basketball — Paul looking to be close to his family in California, Westbrook needing more of a role than he’d get in New York and league sources indicating that Simmons is a long shot for the Knicks.”

Simmons, the first overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2016 NBA Draft, isn’t nearly the same player he once was. He hasn’t averaged double-digits in any category since his last All-Star appearance with the 76ers in 2021, and has seen his career derailed by numerous injuries.

Last season in time split between the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers, Simmons averaged 5.0 points, 5.6 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game in 51 appearances.
