Federico Bernardeschi is undergoing his medical tests in Bologna this afternoon, where he will join as a free agent after three years at Toronto FC.

His contract with the Major League Soccer club was allowed to run down in July and he decided on a return to Italy.

It is reported his deal with Bologna will be until June 2027 with an option to extend for a further year, and his salary is expected to be worth circa €1.8m per season.

“Thank you for what you have done for me and my family,” Bernardeschi told fans in Canada before flying back to the Peninsula.

“We felt at home since we arrived. I will 100 per cent come back, you mean a lot for me and my family. So this is not goodbye, this is see you later.”

The 31-year-old forward has 39 senior caps for Italy, in which he scored six goals and provided six assists.

His most recent appearance for the Azzurri was in June 2022, just before his move to Toronto FC from Juventus.

Bologna are proving a safe haven for former Italy players looking for a return to Serie A, as they also signed Ciro Immobile for free after just one year with Besiktas.
