Mainz appeal at highest DFB court against cup match scheduling

Bundesliga club Mainz plan to lodge a complaint at the German Football Federation (DFB) federal court over the scheduling of their first-round Cup match after two previous appeals have been rejected. Mainz are scheduled to play at promoted second division side Dynamo Dresden on August 18 and will then have a Conference League play-off match three days later.

They are Mainz' first competitive games of the season and start a series of five matches within a fortnight.

The first round in the Cup is played August 15-18 but the DFB said that the match can not be played between August 15 and 17 because of security issues as the dates coincide with a big street festival in the eastern German city.

Mainz want to ask the federal court, which is the highest DFB court, to be granted an exemption to play the match at another date. Previous appeals have been dismissed twice by the DFB.

"Due to our special situation we hope that the federal court will follow our arguments and, in this exceptional case, agree to a date outside this period (August 15-18) in the interests of German football as a whole,’ Mainz chairman Stefan Hofmann said.
