Manchester United’s six-week-long pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo could all be for nothing.

Indeed, the Red Devils are now at risk of missing out on their priority target entirely after Newcastle United ignited their pursuit of Yoane Wissa today.

David Ornstein confirmed Newcastle had begun targeting the 28-year-old following Liverpool’s advancements in signing Hugo Ekitike, who has chosen an Anfield switch despite holding talks with the Magpies in recent days.

So, what does this mean for United?

Sky Sports previously reported that Brentford would be unwilling to lose both Wissa and Mbeumo in one transfer window. Of the pair, they’d likely rather sanction the former’s exit, given he’s three years older than his prolific forward counterpart and recorded five fewer goal contributions in 2024/2025.

With Newcastle now suffering yet another transfer setback, you can expect them to go all-out to get one of their desired additions over the line as swiftly as possible, meaning United must swoop in and meet the Bees’ demands for Mbeumo sooner rather than later.

Yet, considering how reluctant INEOS have been to fork out his price tag so far, fans don’t have high expectations.

INEOS will come under fire if Mbeumo deal collapses

It goes without saying that United failing to sign Mbeumo would be a truly disastrous turn of events – not least because they’ve refused to engage with any other targets for the duration they’ve been targeting the Cameroonian.

Missing out on him at this stage will force INEOS to go back to the drawing board just a month before 2025/2026 gets underway, so you couldn’t blame Ruben Amorim for feeling aggrieved at his lack of backing ahead of his first full campaign in the dugout.
