Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wins ESPY's 2025 NBA Player of the Year award.
Snatching the title away from George Constanza, it's been the Summer of SGA. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has quickly gone from an underrated prospect to a household name who's smashed through the door in all-time greatness.
Gilgeous-Alexander had one of the greatest individual seasons ever. He won about every award you can imagine. He collected the MVP award, Conference Finals MVP trophy and NBA Finals MVP trophy. The last one also meant that the Oklahoma City Thunder capped off one of the most dominant seasons ever with a championship.
The last three seasons have seen Gilgeous-Alexander skyrocket into superstardom. Three straight 30-plus point campaigns will do that. Meanwhile, the Thunder have been tied to his success. A historic 68-14 regular-season translated to a ring in the playoffs.
So it shouldn't be a shocker to see Gilgeous-Alexander's trophy case get stuffed to the point that he'll need a second one. He was named the ESPY's 2025 NBA Player of the Year award winner. Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jayson Tatum were the other nominees.
Gilgeous-Alexander only had an afternoon to celebrate it. ESPN's "NBA Today" was given the honor of naming the winner. But the main award show also named him the ESPY's 2025 Male Athlete of the Year award winner. Talk about awards stacked on awards.
The Thunder have had quite a busy offseason. They've run victory laps on their championship season. Deservingly so, too. Gilgeous-Alexander signed a supermax deal that'll keep him in OKC through the 2030-31 season. Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren did the same.
Don't expect the Thunder to slow down anytime soon. They've won one championship but have a good chance to win more. That's what happens when you build one of the best rosters and are stupid rich with draft assets. Expect Gilgeous-Alexander to frequently be on national television through the rest of his prime.
