Lindor's up next.
On Saturday, David Wright will have his day in the sun. The New York Mets will turn two, retiring his No. 5 and inducting Wright into the team's Hall of Fame before they take on the Cincinnati Reds.
Wright is the preeminent Mets star of a generation and one of the best players ever to call Queens home. He was Captain America for Team USA, and in 2013, he became New York's fourth captain, joining Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, and John Franco.
Wright will be celebrated on Saturday not only for his accomplishments, but also for his character. His combination of talent and leadership is rare, perhaps incomparable in the eyes of Mets fans. But in the years since Wright retired, shortstop Francisco Lindor has emerged as an icon, captivating the Flushing faithful, overcoming adversity, and becoming the heart and soul of a championship contender.
Francisco Lindor is on deck
No player has played as central a role in New York's turnaround as Lindor. The 2024 NL MVP runner-up fueled a miracle postseason run and hit two of the season's most important homers -- one to send the Mets to the playoffs and another to put the finishing touches on the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS.
Lindor has gone from booed to beloved since arriving in 2021. In doing so, he has become the obvious candidate to be New York's next captain.

That news might come sooner than anticipated.
On Wednesday, MLB posted a video titled "Captains of the New York Mets" to its website before quickly taking it down. The minute-long clip featured Wright discussing what it meant to be captain of the Mets and included clips of Hernandez, Carter, and Franco before him.

Halfway through, the focus shifts to Lindor, showcasing his biggest moments in New York.
"If Carlos Mendoza and the organization wants to drop a 'C' on him," Ron Darling said. "It makes sense."
The Mets have made their decision. Whether the news officially drops Thursday during SNY's premiere of "The Wright Way" or Saturday when No. 5 is retired forever, Lindor will soon have that honor bestowed upon him.
Simply put, this is his team. And when Lindor eventually has his press conference, 12 years after Wright's, the lasting sentiment will be that not much will change. Lindor has already been the Mets' captain for years. Soon enough, it will become official.
