Red Sox could soon swing trade for 2-time All-Star closer

The Boston Red Sox do not figure to be in the market for a closer for this season. However, they may be interested in adding to their stellar bullpen and potentially adding a replacement for Aroldis Chapman.

Chapman was an All-Star this season and has been dominant as the closer for the Red Sox. He has 17 saves and a 1.18 ERA. However, he is going to be a free agent after the season.

The Red Sox bullpen has a 3.44 ERA this season, which is among the best in baseball. However, as they start thinking about playing in October, there is no such thing as having too many good relievers. NBC Sports' Justin Legar suggested they could trade for David Bednar of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"If Breslow is looking for a reliever with a proven track record, look no further than Bednar," wrote Legar. "The two-time All-Star struggled mightily in 2024 but has bounced back so far in 2025, posting a 2.53 ERA and 1.125 WHIP with 45 strikeouts and only nine walks in 36 appearances."

Bednar is under contract for one more season. He would likely serve as the setup man for Chapman this season and take over as the closer next year. However, he would also be insurance in case Chapman gets hurt.

Bednar led the National League in saves in 2023. He struggled last season, and to start this season. He was sent to Triple-A, but has been lights out since returning. Since rejoining the big leagues, he has a 1.74 ERA, 12 saves and three holds.
