NBA Commissioner Adam Silver suggests Oklahoma City Thunder could be next dynasty.
After the Oklahoma City Thunder raised the Larry O'Brien trophy last month, they added to a trend in recent years. A new NBA champion was crowned with a fanbase that deserved the achievement after decades of fighting to reach the top.
The Thunder were the seventh different NBA champion in the last seven years. That feat was going to be accomplished either way this year. The Indiana Pacers haven't won a title despite their rich basketball history, and the Thunder didn't have a ring to claim of their own.
Following a Board of Governors meeting, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver discussed the differences in parity and the concept of dynasties. The Golden State Warriors were the last back-to-back NBA champions when they added Kevin Durant. But since then, about every team has had moments when they felt like they were close to glory.
Silver said he's fine with either perception. Both are healthy for the NBA. He even pointed out that the Thunder could soon change that narrative. They were just crowned the second-youngest champion in league history. A historic 68-14 regular-season campaign saw them break several records.
After the celebration, the Thunder locked down Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren to long-term deals that'll keep them in OKC through the rest of the decade. Considering how young their roster is and the number of draft picks they have, the Thunder aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
“I’m perfectly comfortable with dynasties,” Silver said. “I like what we’re seeing right now. I’m not ready to declare we're not going to have dynasties. I’m sure Sam Presti isn’t ready to hear that.”
While Silver said that with a smile, there's always some truth in jokes. Everybody views the Thunder as the title favorite for next season. No reason not to, either. They're best set up to compete for a championship for the foreseeable future.
