Manchester United have reportedly ‘made a move’ for Aston Villa’s No.1, Emiliano Martinez.
The news comes courtesy of Argentine reporter Gaston Edul, who’s frequently been on the money in the past regarding players from his national team.
It’s also not that far out of the realm of possibility to believe, given how United have been linked with Martinez on numerous occasions since 2024/2025 drew to a close.
Emiliano Martinez in, Andre Onana out?
Should a deal come to fruition, it’ll suggest a U-turn has taken place behind the scenes, as it’s recently been claimed Ruben Amorim was prepared to enter the new campaign with Andre Onana between the sticks; a goalkeeping signing was not thought to be a priority at Old Trafford.
It remains to be seen how much Villa will demand for their shot-stopper, who is renowned as one of the best in his position in world football, having accumulated a catalogue of ‘unbelievable’saves at both club and international level.
Martinez, 32, played an integral role in Argentina being crowned world champions back in 2022 and has since earned a host of personal accolades, including the Yashin Trophy twice and being named The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper in 2022 and 2024.
He has spent the last five years at Villa Park, racking up a total of 256 appearances across all competitions and keeping 70 clean sheets.

Last August, the ex-Arsenal star put pen to paper on a five-year contract extension with the Villans, so his tearful display to the club’s supporters in his final home outing of last season left Unai Emery perplexed.
“We will see,”said the manager when pressed on Martinez’s emotional scenes at full-time. “Of course, it is the last match here [this season], and I don’t know. We will see about the team, the players, but of course, they are responding on the field.”
The following week, Martinez oversaw a calamitous display at Old Trafford when he came off his line early and clattered into Rasmus Hojlund, subsequently being brandished a red card. As a result, he’ll miss the opening three games of the 2025/2026 term, wherever that may be.
