Kalen DeBoer is embracing Alabama’s legacy, and that includes the presence of Nick Saban, even in retirement.
During a recent recruiting weekend in Tuscaloosa, fans and recruits alike were surprised to see the legendary former coach still active on campus. Saban, who retired in January 2024, was seen taking photos with prospects and spending time around the program he helped turn into a powerhouse.
DeBoer was asked directly about Saban’s appearance while speaking with the hosts of "The Next Round," and he made it clear he saw nothing wrong with the former coach showing up on such an important weekend.

“Why not make something special for people when they come to your campus for an official visit?” DeBoer said. “If Coach Saban is around and wants to be involved, I’m all for it.”
The visit may have sparked fresh speculation about whether Saban might consider returning to coaching, but DeBoer quickly dismissed those rumors. While Saban remains close to the program, his involvement is supportive rather than supervisory.
“First of all, (Saban is) really busy. He's got a lot going on,” DeBoer explained. “There was one time in spring, I think it was June, early June actually, and I was trying to find a time. I had my assistant check with his, like 'Hey, find a date before fall camp.' We could not find a date where we could get together. He's busy doing his thing.”
DeBoer added more context on how the timing aligned just right.
“It just worked out to where there was a time in his slot to visit Tuscaloosa. It just worked out for us to have a couple meeting slots and it was cool. I felt like it was a special time because these were guys he had met with early in their recruiting process.”
As Alabama prepares for the 2025 season, DeBoer has the Crimson Tide in a strong position following a solid year on the field and a top-five 2026 recruiting class. While Saban is no longer calling plays, his presence is still felt throughout the program, and DeBoer is making it clear he welcomes that connection.
